About us
We are tangata whenua (people of the land) Ngāti Porou and Te Whānau-ā-Apanui,
bound together by shared whakapapa and a shared purpose; to protect and restore the Raukūmara. The work is underway, the people are trained. The landscape is responding, the Raukūmara is forgotten no more.

RAUKŪMARA PAE MAUNGA
E tangi e te Weka I runga o Raukūmara, me koe e te Kiwi i te take o Hikurangi
The Weka calls from the heights of the Raukūmara and the Kiwi responds from the base of Hikurangi
Our large-scale, robust and innovative programme has delivered unparalleled results for Raukūmara, as well as social and cultural outcomes for our people.
In 2020, Raukūmara Pae Maunga Restoration Project - a partnership between Ngāti Porou, Te-Whānau-ā-Apanui and the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai received $34.4 million in government funding (Jobs for Nature). In 2021 the programme was established and the healing of Raukūmara began.
We are the largest Indigenous-led deer management operation in Aotearoa, spanning 110,000 hectares across the Raukūmara ranges. Pioneering innovation through the use of thermal imaging and DNA-based surveys to accurately assess deer density and improve precision management.
We have built the most complex aerial 1080 operation in Aotearoa, treating 115,825 hectares of forest, including 40,000 hectares of private Māori land, and achieving a 99% reduction in possum and rat populations with no 1080 detected in water, demonstrating excellence in large-scale pest control and environmental safety.
We have connected with our people through 180 hui, roadshows, and community meetings held, reaching wide audiences and building trust across tribal territories.
Our staff are trained in monitoring, trap management, species identification, strengthening local capability and technical expertise. Six new backcountry monitoring sites set up within the Raukūmara.Three Intensively Managed Sites established across 3,230 hectares to track ecosystem recovery.
